Architecture Student Crafts Thesis to Preserve Black History

A Savannah native, Kennesaw State University student Olivia Harrell grew up marveling at the architectural beauty of her city’s most historic buildings, including the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and SCAD’s Ruskin Hall. When she ventured away from downtown to the area bordering Savannah’s urban core, however, she often left disappointed in the lack of attention paid toward saving the history of its predominantly African American communities. Now a fifth-year architecture student in Kennesaw State’s College of Architecture and Construction Management, Harrell is using her thesis to explore how Black history in Savannah can be preserved for years to come.

Three Minute Thesis Competition Allows Architecture Students to Showcase Research

This month, her research and presentation skills were rewarded as she won the annual Cooper Carry Three Minute Thesis Competition.

KSU Architecture Student Recognized in National Steel Design Competition

Kennesaw State University student Pablo Garcia was recognized with high honors for his architectural prowess in a recent national steel design competition. A fourth-year student in Kennesaw State’s Department of Architecture, Garcia received honorable mention in the 2020 American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)/Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Steel Design Student Competition, landing among a group of students representing institutions such as Clemson University, Louisiana Tech University and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The competition recognizes 18 exceptional projects, in two categories, that explore a variety of design issues related to the use of steel in design and construction.

Donors construct pathway to graduation through scholarship endowment

Brian and Kim Newsome estimate they have been intertwined with Kennesaw State University in some compacity for nearly a decade, whether it’s through attending Owl football games, watching their son earn his degree or through their company constructing facilities on campus. In that time, their Sandy Springs-based construction company, Albion, has grown into one of the staunchest supporters of Kennesaw State’s Department of Construction Management. Now, motivated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and other societal issues impacting KSU students, the company has created a scholarship endowment which, along with its support for capital projects on the Marietta campus, raises Albion’s recent giving to $125,000.

For the third consecutive year, Kennesaw State is a leading choice for students, according to data from U.S. News & World Report. The U.S. News study determined that Kennesaw State has one of the nation’s highest admissions yield rates, meaning the percentage of admitted students who enroll.

More than 3,500 spring graduates earn degrees from Kennesaw State

Their official ceremony may be postponed, but more than 3,500 Kennesaw State University students are graduating this week. The May 2020 class of 3,512 graduate candidates – 2,893 undergraduate and 619 graduate students – marks an increase from last spring’s 3,400 graduates. The students are earning their degrees and receiving their diplomas after KSU transitioned to fully remote learning midway through the semester because of the coronavirus outbreak, which also caused the May Commencement ceremonies to be postponed.

Architecture student wins prestigious Portman Prize

Kennesaw State University’s Department of Architecture has named Andrew Smith the recipient of the Portman Prize for Outstanding Thesis, awarded to those who best exemplify comprehensive research and design excellence as determined by a panel of experts.
